Holocaust Memorial Day, or Yom HaShoah. The Jewish community observes this day as a time to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust. We are lucky to have Holocaust survivors in our area who can directly relate their experiences to us. We'll be celebrating two additional holidays during the next several days. Israel celebrates its Independence Day on Yom Ha'Atzmaut and its Memorial Day on Yom HaZikaron. The two days follow one another. Israelis celebrate the 68th birthday of the State of Israel with fireworks, barbecues, and sizable celebrations as soon as the sun sets following the national day of mourning. It may seem strange to go from being depressed and lamenting the loss of so many soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for Israel over the previous 68 years to joy and celebration. However, there is no contradiction in Israel. The State was founded due to the sacrifice made by individuals who gave their lives for the nation. Therefore, it becomes sensitive to reflect on the setbacks before enjoying the outcome.

Why is Passover so significant?

The second-most significant holy day in the Jewish calendar is Passover. Jewish families get together for a customary meal known as a seder (say-dur), where certain components retrace Israel's history and retell the tale of God's spectacular redemption of their forefathers.

1. God freed the Jews from 400 years of enslavement.

God brought the Jewish people to Egypt, the only country with food reserves, 400 years before the Passover to preserve them from a catastrophic famine. Joseph, one of Israel's 12 sons who was sold into slavery by his brothers, had, through God's providence, advanced to second in command over Egypt. Because of Joseph, Pharaoh allowed the Israelites to enter the country when they were about to die of starvation. But after Pharaoh passed away, his successor made the Jews enslaved people. They were held captive until God used Moses as His tool to free them at Passover, 400 years later to the day. The Passover Haggadah (HAH-gah-dah) declares that "we would still be slaves" if God had not delivered us.

2. Through the miracles surrounding Passover, God revealed His strength.

The prospect of allowing the Hebrew enslaved people to flee Egypt made Pharaoh tremble. He would lose a million workers if they left. As a result of his refusal to let them leave, God showed all of Egypt His strength. Every time Pharaoh steadfastly refused, God sent a supernatural calamity upon Egypt. God manifested His strength throughout the entire land through locusts, frogs, boils, and water that turned to blood.
